g27 loses FFB as soon as rF starts

BIZ112

Hello race fans
I've been running rFactor 1 since '06 with my old black Momo and have had virtually no problems. I upgraded to a G27 about 3 weeks ago and have spent more time trying to get this wheel to run right than actual track time. Originally, the FFB worked fine. The only issue was that the LED's weren't working. I did an unrelated Windows 7 reinstall the other day (same OS, just a reinstall)and that's when the problems started.

When I plug in my G27, it goes through it's start-up test and everything is fine. LED's come on, wheel goes back and forth, small dead zone, FFB is "tight". Now, when I load rF, the FFB instantly disappears and a 180 degree dead zone appears. (you can spin the wheel 180 degrees back and forth with your pinky finger until you hit resistance). You can feel the FFB disappear if you have your hand on the wheel as rFactor starts up. It's like the wheel goes limp. This happens, no matter what cars I have loaded. You can "drive" this way, but on track the wheel is squirrley on the straights and almost gets yanked out of your hand in the turns very unnaturally and it's no fun. It didn't do that before the Windows reinstall. Oddly enough, the LED's work when on track now, when they didn't before.

I'm running a brand new install of Windows 7 (twice). A brand new install of rFactor (I've tried both full and lite, twice). A 3 week old G27. I've tried all 5 usb's. I've tried reversing the FFB. I've tried with and without the logitech profiler. Double checked that everything was plugged in. I figure I'll wait to try any FFB mods (Leo's etc) until I get the wheel working right in the first place. I've tried the stock cars and modded ones. I have plenty of computing power (I get about 125 fps on track.). Oh, and I just took out my old Momo and plugged it in and it works just fine (no FFB issues at all).

If I go into G27 properties, it says everything is working properly and drivers are up to date. Obviously, something is not, somewhere. I downloaded fresh installs of both sizes of rFactor and a fresh Profiler (off of the Logitech website) when I used it. I assume that the working Momo would indicate that no rF files are corrupt? Is my new wheel screwed up already? Am I getting some sort of incompatible driver from Logitech somehow? I don't have any other racing sims, so I have nothing to compare to, to see if the wheel works there.

So... that's about all I can tell you, other than I may need a psychologist! It sucks so bad to have this bright shiny wheel sitting next to the computer and not being able to figure out how to use it. Am I missing something obvious? I don't get it and need some help. Anybody got any ideas? Thanks in advance.

In rF1 controller settings there is a slider to go from -100 to +100, try reversing whatever your is. I suspect/hope that may solve your problem.

You know, I tried alot of slider settings, but I guess I didn't try anything around -70. It seems to work great. I think I just freaked out and panicked about the huge steering lock off track. Now that I think about it, I can understand no ground force=light steering. Higher speed, heavier steering. Thanks for getting me to sniff around some more, Knight. So, I guess we can call this one closed. Thanks again.

Well, I'm back to the same old problem, so I don't know. It's still doing all of the above. I can't explain why it worked for a few laps. None of this makes any sense to me.

Try the following:
- Make sure the FFB is set to -100
- then set FFB type to "wheel", or "G25/G27" if you see that listed.
- Then set FFB effects to "off" (should be able to choose from full, high, medium, low, off).
- Then press drive and get on track, run the car down pitlane for just a second or two.
- Then press escape and go back in the controller section and remap the wheel. To do this click "turn left" then turn your wheel left, click "turn right" then turn wheel right.
- Then go back to FFB effects and set it to "full", (It should have been previously set to "off" as instructed above).
- Then go into the garage screen and raise the car's steering lock to suit how many degrees of rotation you have set in the your Logitech Wheel's control panel. The Momo Racing (momo black) was a 240 degree wheel, so if, for example, you are using 540 degrees in your Logitech profiler than you should make the steering lock in the car's garage setup menu around double of what you were using on the old 240 degree Momo racing.

No such luck, but thanks for the suggestions. I did another re-install of Windows and assc. programs today and rFactor and my g27 are playing a little nicer together. The wheel has resistance and the big dead zone is gone now. I'm still having problems getting the FFB and LED's to work, though. Thanks for your suggestions Spinneli, but they were a no go. Everything looks bumpy on screen but turning the wheel is smooth as silk (not bumpy). Oh well, the search continues. Maybe I'll stumble on an answer one of these days. Thanks for the suggestions...

I don't know if this will help anybody else, but here's my profiler settings that work with my specific g27 and they work pretty decent for me. Not guaranteeing anything for anybody else, though.
overall effects 80%
spring effect @ 0
damper strength @ 0
yes- enable centering spring
allow game to adjust settings...yes
I'm using 310 degrees steering rotation
If I try and lower the centering spring strength to zero, my old problem with the no FFB shows up again. I put the centering spring back to 100 and the problem went away. Same thing happens if I set overall effects to over 100. I don't know why my settings are different than most, but they work for me. Now, we'll see how long it lasts. lol

I don't know if this will help anyone else, but these are g27 settings that work for "me".
overall effects @ 80%
spring effects @0%
damper strength @ 0%
yes to enable centering spring
I'm using 310 degrees steering rotation
allow game to adjust settings checked
and -100 FFB in-game in rFactor
If I try and lower centering spring below 100 or overall effects over 100, the above problems show up again.
I don't know why, but it works for me as a good starting spot. Hope it can help somebody else!
