Suspension and Damping

Ian Mills

Hi there,

am trying to get me head around rfactors calculation behind suspension modelling. Ultimately i am looking for a way to calculate damper settings for a car (or a starting point at least)
To do this it is my understanding that i need

- unsprung mass (i can get this from the pm file)
- motion ratio
- spring rate
-weight distribution.

from here i can work out suspension frequency.
i think i am nearly there but i cant figure out how to get motion ratio. i know the formula but some mods dont even have the suspension arms anywhere near the pushrods or wheels. So i am not sure measuring them is correct. Is it simply a line in the physics file ?

Thanks for your help

Ian

thank you

so with regards to motion ratio, do you know which line it is ? is it SpringMult=1.0 ?

Yes. The consensus is though that this is the motion ratio squared. To get the spring rate at the wheel, you square the motion ratio.

My tests on GTR2 indicate that the pushrod angle is the only thing taken into account. I changed the position of the pushrod relative to the wheel/spindle and it made no difference.
