rFactor Dedicated Server

Can someone please explain to me how to setup up a dedicated server on windows 7. I go to rFactor Dedicated and open it and choose all the setting I want then I go in game and when i click load on my game I get join timed out.

Hello,

Can you please give details of what type of internet connection you have (cable, dsl etc),
What modem/routers make and model?
Also, did Windows 7 bring up a warning asking if you want to give rfactor access to the internet?

Once I have that information, I should be able to guide you through it.
On a personal preference, many people say use Humachi but I dont like it because other people can access the files on your computer, and it doesn't work well with Atheros based chipsets.

It is cable I believe it runs are tv too so ya must be cable and its a smc router i brb with the model

Are you running rFactor on the same machine that you are running the server? Also, how are you connecting to the server? By IP or off the list? If you are connecting from the list, do you have the "Refresh list type" set to LAN? If you have it set to "Internet" then the list will use your public IP which isn't going to work on your local network. You need to switch the "Refresh List Type" to LAN or just join by IP using 127.0.0.1 if you are running rF on the same machine as the server.

I must have a different setup to you Noel. Once all the ports are openned and forwarded in my router, I can start the dedicated server program on my Windows XP pc. I can then start rfactor normally on the same pc and see the dedicated server in the matchmaker list on the internet with all the other servers, others on the internet and myself can join it with no problem.

You must have your public IP assigned directly to your NIC rather than useing NAT. Most people have their public IP assigned to a router and their NIC gets a private IP which then gets NATed to their public IP. There for they can't join from the matchmaker when it is set to Internet.

Same here, the public IP is assigned to my router. I openned the rfactor ports, and then port forward them to a static lan IP (private) address.

Maybe it's just the difference between cable and dsl routers.
:)

Not necessarily cable Vs DSL. Just one router Vs another. I have lost count of the number of times I have seen people run a server and get join timeout when trying to connect to their server from the same machine or another machine on the same network because they are trying to connect via the matchmaker when the list is set to internet.

All the times people have said to me they couldn't host because others get timeout, was either the password was wrong, or they hadn't setup the port forwarding properly on their routers.
After I helped them setup the portwarding, they had no problems with people connecting to them through the matchmaker on the internet setting.

The problem isn't wih other people connecting via matchmaker. The problem is people on the local network not being able to connect. Many times people have trouble connecting to their own server yet others can connect over the Internet just fine. But yeah most of the time it is port mapping. But this guy was talking about his own server which surely isn't a port mapping problem as it is on the same machine or network. He could have a software firewall blocking the traffic too. Who knows. I suspect he solved his problem and has abandoed this thread. :)
