rF1 with windows 10?

Dan Minges

I have been using rF1 for years, with XP then Win 7. Now with my new upgrade to Win 10 it don't work. Any ideas?

I also had the same issue. Run you rfactor.exe under Vista. You can change this by clicking on the properties on rfactor.exe and click on the compatibility tab.
When I ran this way, it now works but I seemed to have lost my user data. For some reason it opens a new folder in your Documents folder, named rfactor. I just copied and pasted my user data from the rfactor folder in Program Files (x86) to there. So far so good! :)

I triedl different "compatabilty" modes, starting with Win7 which is what I have been using, then XP, then Vista (thanks for the idea!) It doesn't make any difference. When I run as administrator at least I get the box asking if I want to "allow rfactor.exe (fom an 'unknown publisher') to make changes, which I allow. Nothing happens though, not even a splash screen.

I am able to run "rfconfig.exe" and have tried several different combinations of "shader level", resolution, windowed or not, and so on. It doesn't make any difference...

I wondered about the DX8 vs DX11 thing and tried to install DX9, but the online installer will not allow this for this version of Windows. I did an installation of rFactor lite hoping to get DX9 this way. That installed fine but also does not run.

My Windows10 install is an upgrade from my 64bit Windows7, not a clean install. rFactor 1 worked perfectly. in Win7. I do remember having to so some fiddling to get it going in Win7, including copying my Trymedia folder from my XP install and maybe some other stuff, but now I don't remember exactly what if anything else. I will try different stuff, but if you have it working in Win10 please let me know.

Thanks guys!

Mmm,

I think i won't upgrade then... :)

rF2 makes use of DX9 too... But it works with Windows 10...

Yeah, I'm not sure? Mine was also a Win7 64-bit upgrade and haven't had an issue since I did the above?

Yes my rF2 works better in 10 than in 7, and required no changes at all.

I get the impression that Windows 10 is just a marketing tool to help Microsoft push ads at you, get you using their "Store" and cloud services, and boost Bing hits via Edge. Edge works pretty well but Chrome is what I use for actual web work. Also annoying is you have much less control of the updates with 10.

I will be using my trusty XP install for rF1 league stuff at least for now. Dammit...

Thankfully, you can turn all that junk off. I damn sure did. It's ridiculous what the world's coming to.

I had issues running rfactor with Windows 8.1 and it simply needed a full update of DirectX. I do not think that DX9 is nativley included with Windows 10/8.1 so it needs to be manually added. That fixed my issues and RF1 runs fine with no issues at all in both Windows 8.1 and Windows 10

Back in 2012 I was apart of testing for the rFactor1 exe. The reason for the exe update was the activation used to go through Trymedia. Trymedia was going out of business so ISI now do the activation through their own site.
If you still have and are running a Trymedia version it's possible that this is causing the Win10 issues.
The version I got then and still have is 1255c. As a and b were part of the testing.
If you have this older version it maybe advisable to update it to the latest version exe.
To obtain your rFactor1 Product Key, enter your Purchase Order Number or the email address used when you first activated rFactor.
If your out of activations email to purchase (at) rfactor (dot) net with the subject title "rF1_ISI Activation Renewal" Email address has changed sins rF1 was purchased? Add this to the email with the email address you used.
https://community.racesimcentral.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=4680&d=1352836722
The new activation page
asks for the email used for first purchase.
It you use the "Already Purchased" to obtain the new "Key". This email with the new Key will go to your old email.
Email rFactor1 support with your old email or original purchase code so they can send you your new key and updated email address.

If your unsure of this, have league race coming up. Install the 1255c to a different location. This will keep your install intact and you can take the time you need to get the new version running.

If it was DX9 issue for Win8 and now 10 all the older SimBin titles would have the same problem. A lot of people are still heavy into Papyrus NR2003. This would also be a DX affected program.
Just to note.

I installed "rFactorDemo" via Steam. This works fine. That leads me to think it is not a DX9 problem, but I don't know that much about how Steam works. I guess I should try installing "rFactorDemo" from ISI...

The more I investigate this the more I think it is something weird with the security/permissions inherited from my probably screwy Win7 file system. When I did the Win7 clean install I remember flailing around trying to cope with unfamiliar security/permissions until I realized it worked better the less I messed with it. By the way, I use Windows Defender and Windows Firewall but am pretty sure these are not a problem. Next I am going to try a "reset" of my Win10. If that doesn't help I will either revert to Win7 (which i fear will also be messed up now) or a clean install via DVD.

I only use Windows for rFactor and rFactor2, at a ratio of about 80/20. I would love to use rFactor2 more but have yet to get involved in a rF2 league, so I spend my driving time testing/practicing for the rF1 league. The rest of the time I am running LinuxMint.

Story developing... Just installed full rFactor version 1255G and it works fine in demo mode. Had been using 1255c Lite which did not work. Now just have to activate (can't find my purchase order from 2006) so we will see. Off next to the ISI product key recovery page.

Is there any way to retrieve my key from the rF1(1255c) I was using for league racing Sunday? I have 4 (or is it 5?) different installs of rF1 representing 9 years of mods, leagues, modded mods, setup development and so on I would like to use again...

I have now determined that it is indeed my 1255c rFactor.exe causing the problem. Replacing the 1255c in the install I was using in Win7 with the new (working in demo) 1255g rFactor.exe now takes me to the activation screen instead of doing nothing. I have not done a "reset" of Win10. Likely not necessary if I get my activation code.

Just received may Activation Code, and all is well!!! Big thanks to ISI support for the prompt response!

What have we learned? If you have problems with Windows 10 and rFactor1, replace outdated rFactor.sxe with the new 1255G .exe (mine is dated June 10 2013) and keep your activation key and/or purchase receipt in a safe place which you can remember.

In my best Leave Brittney alone blubbering voice, I love you guys at ISI!!!

I've got mine working on win10 by doing the fresh install of 1255g but getting some strange quirks as I move mods and my profile back over to the new rf1 folder. I loaded up OW challenge 2006, selected my rf3 car. Went to race at Silverstone but once I got to the garage it had loaded up SR grand prix (Howstons) instead which is what I was playing previously. I expected some strange stuff with 3rd party content but this is default ISI content.

It is reading your old profile that's all, should settle once you start racing things again.

1255f I think is the last trymedia version.
1255g is the latest and is ISI's own version.

Actually I think 1.255c was newer then 1.255F. I think it was just a mistake with the version numbers. If I remember correctly c was the first one to remove TryMedia... g followed very shortly after c.

Edit: Actually 1.255b was the first build to remove TryMedia. b and c are both newer than F. Confusing.

Although some messing with it was needed from w7 to 8.1..I couldn't get it to work straight away on 8.1 not sure what was the reason..been a while..

In the end I created a new driver profile, think it was some kind of strange permissions thing.

My PLR file and some other cfg files now sits in C:\users\Kendo1978\Virtual Store\Program FilesX86\Rfactor1\

I bought the DVD-Boxed Version of rFactor in germany a couple of years ago. In 2007 or 2008. After updating to Win10, I did a fresh install of rFactor but even with the DVD-Inside, the game crash right after I hit the "drive" button in the practice menu. Any suggestions how I can fix this issue?

aiw cam editor not working in windows 10?. will not even open.
rFactor works just fine.
