Editing cube maps causes pink reflection

I'm trying to make a car cube map for rfactor that will suit night races such as Singapore, however when I put it in game, instead of reflecting the cube map it reflects just pink. I'm presuming the issue is the type of DDS file I'm trying to edit but their's a problem with that, I can't work out how to check what type of DDS file a normal cube map is. Any help would be appreciated.

Make sure you've selected Cube Map rather than 2D Texture ...

What do you know of cube maps?

If you're new to them, then perhaps you're not using proper tools for editing and saving cube maps?

For example - you can open a cube map from DDS file in GIMP, but after being opened, it will be treated as 2D image with 6 layers. When exporting, you may end up with 2D texture instead of cube map.
Personally, I'm using NVIDIA's commandline tools to compress normalmaps and cubemaps. I only use GIMP's exporter for 2D textures and only if I can live with low compression quality.

I'm using paint.net. Is there any freeware that can convert the DDS files to the type of DDS file that cube maps are saved in?

With paint.net you are able to edit *.jpg or similar files right? I don't know paint.net.

Then you can try this:
- Take a cube map like THIS
- turn it 90° to the right
- edit it as you like or maybe you find one that is OK as it is
- get the Software i posted before: Cube Map Generator
- load the cross into the Generator and then save it as "Cube Map (dds)"
