Support for 3D analog instrument needles

LesiU

I have some nice 3D needles for my speedometer, tacho, fuel level etc. I can't get them to work. I took as a reference Kodi ZR but it has 2D needle, as a texture.. and that is working without problems. Are 3D needles not supported by rFactor 1?

I've never seen working 3D needles in rFactor, just 2D ones. I don't think they're supported.

Best regards

Well, it's not that bad. I usually create a 3D axis for the needle (so it doesn't move) and then the needle itself is 2D. It's not the same but the result is better than just a 2D texture.

Anyway, if you only use a 2D texture is ok also (and easier and better for performance). Just try to reproduce the look of it using a 2D texture. Of course shadows and reflections will be static, so if yours are made of metal they won't look 100% credible (plastic ones usually look better) but needles aren't that important usually.

Regards

Yes, of course, but implementing moving 3D needles shouldn't be a problem, so... why not have it? Most of the needles are plastic so they look quite good as 2D textures (if you make them in good res), but there are also some that definatelly looks better and more realistic as 3D models. rF is a modding platform so it'd be nice to have more options than less ;-)

I don't want to create different thread for that, I will ask here.
Is it possible, and how, to use one background texture for more then one gauge? For example, water temp and fuel level are sharing the same dial. Water is on the top and fuel is at the bottom.
I've made material "water_fuel_gauges", named background texture the same "water_fuel_gauges.tga" and use it for both indicators in cockpitinfo as the background texture but only one indicator will work.
Any suggestions?

I'm keen to see how this new animation system works and wondering if it can be used with cars and set to receive events, this will make the possibility of a 3d needle and things like the pulleys and belt's on a supercharger spin in time with the engine revs.

LesiU, have you set it up in the cockpitinfo.ini? Your probably best to start a new thread for that, it has the potential to take this thread way off. :)
Plus new thread will make it easier for others to find help on the subject in the future

LesiU,

I answered your gauge question in your new thread so anyone looking for the answer can find it there.
