Modding existing rFactor track

Excrubulent

I originally wanted to reproduce Ken Block's Gymkhana 3 track for Dirt 3, and when I discovered the track had already been made, that's what brought me to rFactor. Unfortunately, the track isn't quite suitable in its current state, as can be seen from the youtube videos of attempts to reproduce the video. They're thematically similar, but most of the actual shots don't look much like the original.

I'm interested in making some alterations to the Linas-Montlhery track, and I'm interested in how to go about it. The alterations won't be huge - just adding/removing cones, and adding a few utility roads to the inside of the oval. Once they're in place, a shot-for-shot reproduction of the video should be possible (with the possible exception of the segway donuts :p).

I've downloaded the track, is that all I'll need to start making changes to it? Would it be better to contact the maker for the original files? Can I convert the existing rFactor track files to something that 3DSMax can use? Converting for RF2 is an issue for later, I think.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: Also, I have the permission of the author of the track, and I'm intending to release any work I do for rFactor. Modding Dirt 3 looks like a bit of a waste of time.
